On Sunday, November 30th, HAERTS and Mikky Ekko will both perform live at A&R Music Bar. HAERTS is a four-member indie pop group from Brooklyn, New York. The band consists of four members: vocalist Nini Fabi, keyboardist Ben Gebert, guitarist Garrett Ienner and bassist Derek McWilliams. They have an electro-pop, almost magical sound, with a soft 80s vibe as well. The quartet has also worked with bands such as St. Lucia, who helped produce some of their songs.
HAERTS just recently released their first self-titled debut album HAERTS, featuring synth pop songs such as “Wings,” the band’s debut single. The album includes dreamy vocals and melodies, comprising of new as well as old tracks such as “Hemiplegia,” a song off of the band’s 2013 EP Hemiplegia.
In an interview with Billboard, Nini Fabi explained how the band got its name: “We went through the lyrics and were looking for a name that had meaning for us, and was also a general concept…The word ‘hearts’ kept coming up in each of the songs, and we just decided pretty spontaneously to mix up the spelling — to make it personal, in a way.”
Alongside HAERTS will be singer-songwriter Mikky Ekko, who is probably best known for being featured on Rihanna’s 2013 single “Stay.” Since then, Mikky Ekko has broken out as a solo artist, recently releasing his music video for “Smile,” a track off of his debut album Time, which is set to be released early 2015. Mikky Ekko, in an interview with Billboard, claims “I feel like we took the time to put together a really, really strong album.” A lot of his songs deal with themes of love, and consist of pulsing drumbeats and strong, unique vocals.
The video posted above is of HAERTS’ song “Wings.” From this video, it is easy to see what Nini Fabi means in this quote about the record: “The record for us is all about the sentiment. It has a sort of melancholy to it. There’s songs that have a lightness, but I think there’s something on the record that has a certain darkness even if you have those synths that make it lighter.”
